Finding ‘your passion’ is something that happened to Corrina at the age of 10. That’s when she started to learn about the global impacts of climate change. Corrina Serda was the youngest person in the world that Al Gore trained to give his slideshow “An Inconvenient Truth”. She received the training in April of 2008 at age 11 from the Climate Project Canada, after giving the solutions portion of her mother Victoria’s presentation over 100 times to more than 20,000 people around Ontario. Since the training she has given about 70 presentations to another 16,000 people primarily at schools, but also for youth groups, leadership conferences, churches and at the Bruce County Museum.
On March 29, 2010, Corrina was excited to receive one of 13 Ontario Junior Citizens of the Year award from the Lieutenant Governor, David Onley and the Ontario Community Newspapers Association. She also received certificates from Premier Dalton McGuinty and the Hon. Carol Mitchell.
On March 1, Corrina launched the Climate Project Canada's Green Your School Challenge Tour using a slide show for teens she helped to develop. Starting on her 14th birthday on April 19, Corrina began a 10 day Earth Week 16 presentation high school tour from Kitchener to Markham where she inspired 8000 students!
This year, Corrina carpooled to Nashville to attend the International “Our Choice” training with Al Gore from June 26-28, where she was honoured with the designation of Canadian representative of the Inconvenient Youth organization.
She’s had a lot of fun meeting people over the years, like Al Gore (former US Vice-President), David Suzuki (The Nature of Things), Dr. Rajendra Pachauri (the Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), Mark and Craig Kielburger (founders of Free the Children and Me to We), Simon Jackson (Spirit Bear Youth Coalition), Roz Savage (extreme ocean rower), and Kristina Groves (Silver Medalist Olympic Speed Skater).
Corrina was featured in an iChannel television show about teens addressing the challenges facing the emerging generation. Find the episode with Corrina "Envirokids" here: http://www.ichannel.ca/issue4teens
In her off time she enjoys petting her rabbits Tae and Pepper. She also likes to climb her maple tree, and swim in Lake Huron. An avid reader, her favourite books are A Spell for Chameleon and
Magic Bites, and enjoys Patricia Briggs, Ilona Andrews, & Piers Anthony’s books. She has been homeschooled, but is attending Saugeen District Secondary School, and belongs to the Planeteers club and sauGREEN for the Environment.
All in all, at the mighty age of 15, Corrina has inspired people to take responsibility and work on solutions to help with the climate crisis, and is in the top 10 presenters around the world trained by Al Gore. If each of the people in her audiences implemented only one of her suggestions and inspired two others to do the same, more than 100,000 green acts would have been achieved across Ontario.
If you'd like to congratulate her, have questions, want to inquire about a presentation or would like to chat, feel free to join her Fan page on Facebook and leave a note on her wall or email corrinaserda [at] gmail.com.
